Provide deep technical expertise to support delivery and maintenance of fiber optic telecommunications transport related to Smart Grid communications. Specifically, provide technical leadership supporting the deployment optimized utilization of fiber optic infrastructure throughout the Exelon Companies in accordance with established strategy and architecture. Act as the primary technical interface with the Utility business and engineering & construction vendors to ensure solution complies with technical standards and architecture. Expected to work under minimal supervision.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Provide technical expertise and/or engineering support for deployment and construction of fiber optic infrastructure. Ability to create engineering drawings in Auto-Cad or other drawing management system. Ability to inventory fiber assets including establishing standards where none exists and maintaining on-going configuration of installed solution.
Assist IT Architecture and Engineering community in planning the introduction of new technologies and/or identifying the most appropriate technology choices to accomplish goals based on the Management Model. Ensure appropriate implementation and optimization of fiber rsources aligned with approved standards and architecture to meet the Utility Smart Grid application requirements.
Maintain strong relationship working with the Utility business implementing the fiber construction project and on-going maintenance of fiber infrastructure. Interfacing with and managing vendor partners supporting the construction of the fiber infrastructure.
Identify and provide Business and IT data on IT trends and issues. Participate in IT architecture review and standards setting. Lead the development of Design Standards, white papers, conducting presentations as needed to explain why a technology is being recommended by IT.
Maintain technical knowledge and business acumen within own discipline or function
Provide performance evaluations, career development feedback, and recognition as required.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline and typically 2 to 5 years experience in fiber engineering and related SONET communication technologies or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Ability to perform detailed fiber engineering functions including inventory management of fiber resources and cad drawing updates.
Experience working in a substation environment including detailed understanding of specific requirements and standards for SCADA and system protection communications.
Thorough understanding of OSI layers 1, 2 and 3
Excellent communications skills- Able to effectively communicate highly technical information in non-technical terminology (written a verbal).
Understanding of change management principles associated with new technology implementations.
Strong organizational skills including the ability to develop a comprehensive configuration management program for fiber inventory and provisioning.
Understanding of project management principles
Maintains responsibility for fiber assets across specific operating company
Promotes knowledge via seminars, presentations and publications within IT and Exelon
Participates in technological innovation to drive new business opportunities and solve complex business problems
Works under minimal supervision.
