General Electric Senior Engineer - Customer Application Engineering in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois

Role Summary:

As a world-class team member, the Senior Engineer - Customer Application Engineering is responsible for coordinating all technical and costing aspects of Grid Solutions AC Substations (ACS) Projects proposals.

Essential Responsibilities:

As the Senior Engineer - Customer Application Engineering, you will:

  • Lead the technical team to provide full "Engineer, Procure & Construct" estimates for conventional utility, industrial substations, and electrical Balance of Plant (eBOP) equipment for power generation facilities [proposals include technical specifications, quantifying design & installation work scope definition, cost allocation, estimation of engineering, installation and start-up based on customer specifications and/or industry standards (IEEE, NESC, ANSI, NEMA, etc), sourcing, and historical data]

  • Interpret drawings, specifications, and scope documents for thorough preparation of estimates

  • Perform material takeoffs from layouts, general arrangement, and one-line diagrams to prepare Bill of Quantities (BOQ) for all disciplines (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical)

  • Perform basic studies necessary to verify proper specification and design of proposed solutions

  • Provide technical support to create subcontractors and power equipment bid packages

  • Augment the commercial team for customer presentations of technical capabilities and proposals

  • Champion programs that make the electrical engineering team more efficient and cost effective

  • Develop new engineering concepts and products based on feedback from market exposure

  • Work with, leading where appropriate, multi-functional engineering teams in the development of conceptual solutions, technical work scope & specifications for project applications

  • Support opportunity screening and orders closing strategy efforts

  • Ensure compliance to customer regional and country technical specifications for proposal work-scopes

  • Provide risk analysis support

  • Provide advice on in-territory costs

  • Work in close coordination with the ACS Project execution team

  • Maintain a high level of technical competency in current technologies, product offerings and their applications

  • Mentor other engineers

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college

  • Minimum of 10 years of design and construction experience in substation, transmission or power generation projects for the power generation / distribution / transmission industry

  • Minimum of 1 year of technical proposal writing and proposal management experience

  • Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) from an accredited university or college

  • Experience with large and complex Project proposal development

  • Superior communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills

  • Construction, field testing and commissioning experience

  • Energetic with the ability to work in a team environment

  • Creative, able to lead a team and be accountable for team results in order to deliver a high-quality product on time and under budget

  • Professional Engineering registration (within the US)

  • Knowledge of and experience using Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards and codes [i.e., National Electric Code (NEC) and NESC]

  • Knowledge of the American Association of Cost Engineer (AACE) principles

  • Experience in computer aided estimating programs (Success, Timberline, MC2, HardDollar, etc.)

  • Familiarity with and ability to apply RS Mean, Richardson, or other standard costing tools to support substation, transmission, and generation projects

  • Knowledge of HV / EHV substation physical / outdoor design and construction including foundation design and site preparation

  • Knowledge of synchronous motors, generators, and eBOP equipment

  • Knowledge of substation protection & control schemes, SCADA communication systems, factory and site testing, commissioning methods, and maintenance

  • Excellent personal computer skills, including software development, and familiarity with AutoCAD / Microstation

  • Experienced user of MS Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
