Neonatology, a subspecialty of pediatrics, focuses on the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill or premature newborn infant. This hospital-based specialty is practiced largely in neonatal intensive care units. The duties of a neonatologist are to provide care services for newborns including the evaluation, diagnoses and monitoring of illnesses and health challenges associated with newborns, and are specifically trained to handle complex and high-risk situations. Neonatologists diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects, and will coordinate and manage the care of newborns born premature, critically ill, or in need of surgery.Additionally, the neonatologist will prescribe medication, monitor the recovery of patients, consult with obstetricians, pediatricians, and family physicians about conditions affecting newborn infant patients, and read and interpret patient charts. They also visit, counsel and attend to pregnant mothers and premature newborns admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit ( NICU ) on a daily basis, monitoring the condition of such patients and recommending potential diagnoses. After patients are discharged, the Neonatologist will provide short-term follow-up care on an outpatient basis, in coordination with the newborn's pediatrician.
