UL, LLC Fire Protection Research Engineer III in Northbrook, Illinois

What you’ll learn & achieve:

UL's Fire Testing division in the Northbrook, IL facility is looking for an individual to perform engineering work in a Research organization. The work includes project design, hazard identification, product safety considerations, and generate documentation necessary to produce test standards. Individual will work in a team environment. Activities include:

  • Assist in conducting studies and analysis to determine the feasibility of various engineering approaches.

  • Help to define concepts and criteria to resolve challenges in current testing / certification programs or develop new program.

  • Participate in the planning of and conducting experiments to apply engineering of scientific knowledge related to hazard based safety engineering.

Projects require substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art engineering principals and theories, and uses professional concepts and procedures to solve a wide range of research based problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Identifies fundamental knowledge needed to enhance UL’s industry and standards position and support the strategy of aligned categories.

  • Applies diverse engineering concepts to new technology and product systems to resolve specific research tasks. Exercise a high degree of judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad engineering research concepts and guiding the analysis of unique problems and developing new and improved techniques and methods.

  • Analyze product data and laboratory test results to determine causes of product safety challenges and develop solutions, and evaluates technical specifications and factors related to process or design objectives.

  • Stays ahead of changing technologies in the field by reading journals, scientific publications, and attending academic and industry conferences.

  • Author technical reports, develop and make presentations and participate in standards writing projects.

  • Performs other duties as directed.

What makes you a great fit:

  • University Degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physics or other related technology discipline plus generally two years of direct related work experience.

  • Demonstrated general knowledge of engineering disciplines, possession of and ability to maintain engineering academic and applied knowledge and skills.

  • Ability to collaborate with peers, and work directly with Research Engineers, Scientists and other team members in order to complete a project from start to finish. Willingness to work hands on in the lab.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Ability to interface with clients directly and effectively.

  • Self-starter, quick learner, and eager to be hands-on. Creativity and curiosity are personal attributes which lead to success in this position.
