Education: Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Biochemical, or Petroleum Engineering from an accredited university is required.

Registration: Professional Engineering registration or CPIP certification is highly preferred or may be required.

Experience: This position requires 15 or more years of relevant industrial experience in chemical engineering.

Generally responsible for supervision and technical direction over a team of engineers and process engineering designers when functioning as a lead engineer. As lead engineer, responsibilities include total delivery of the process engineering deliverables and services on time, within budget and meeting quality expectations. Duties may include performing advanced engineering work serving as a technical specialist for complex engineering assignments. Work at this level requires extensive progressive experience in chemical/biochemical/petroleum and process engineering and involves utilization of project controls for cost, schedule and quality of projects. This work will be performed under minimal supervision at a cient site.

Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Scope and evaluate process enhancements and communicate required project scopes via updates to process flow diagrams and piping and instrumentation diagrams.

  • Evaluate alternative solutions based on technical feasibility and economics during early capital project development.

  • Develop heat and material balance information using third party commercial software (Hysys, Aspen, or similar simulation software).

  • Perform hydraulic analyses of piping systems to properly transport gases/fluids, as well as to specify pumps, compressors and control valves.

  • Perform sizing and rating of chemical process equipment including heat exchangers, pumps, cooling towers, air coolers, distillation towers, separation equipment and filters.

  • Develop functional control descriptions on capital projects which describe the control strategy and operator interface requirements with existing PLC systems.

  • Participate in plant optimization teams to identify opportunities to improve safety, cost, and capacity of chemical processes.

  • ‎Independently evaluate, ‎select, ‎and apply standard engineering techniques, ‎owner specifications, procedures and criteria, ‎using judgment in making system adaptations and modifications.

  • Present technical information to peers for review, and to incorporate requirements in technical specifications for procuring equipment and instruments. Solicit competitive bids from equipment and instrument vendors and recommend procurement decisions.

  • Analyze problems and take appropriate steps to ensure continuous and reliable operation of equipment and systems.

  • Suggest and present improvements in operating/maintenance procedures to resolve system malfunctions. Develop operating instructions on new processes.

  • Provide direction, oversight and design review support, in a lead engineer capacity, to other process engineers on their respective capital projects that are integrated under coordinated plant expansion and process improvement programs.

  • Mentor fellow direct and contract process engineers as well as prepare and provide training for other plant personnel.

  • Participate in Process Hazard Analysis and studies.

  • Initiate management of change requests on assigned projects per the plant’s process safety management program.

  • Develop and implement Pre Start-up Safety Review (PSSR) test plans used to check the integrity and functionality of new process equipment in conjunction with area operating team.

  • Provide start-up technical support of assigned capital projects and execute a leadership role in resolving operational problems through coordinated tactical planning, systematic problem solving and effective communications with plant operations.

  • Training and experience sizing pressure relief devices and performing relief valve contingency analysis.

  • Experience with quantitative risk assessment on new and / or modified chemical processes

  • Experience with batch and continuous unit operations related to surfactants, phthalic anhydride or polyester polyols is a plus.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering

  • 15+ years of experience working as an engineer in the chemical process and/or refining industry successfully managing multiple concurrent capital projects.

  • Proven ability to lead project teams through project scope development and driving team consensus decisions on scope technical deliverables.

  • Demonstrated strong ability in process design including distillation, mass transfer, reaction, kinetics, and thermodynamics. Expected to be technical expert on projects assigned.

  • Experience applying standard engineering techniques, ‎procedures and criteria to ensure compliance with federal environmental regulations and OSHA safety regulations.

  • Experience with selecting and specifying cost effective materials of construction in chemical process environments that maximizes equipment service life

  • Demonstrated experience working within a front end loaded engineering environment

  • Effective verbal, active listening, and written communication skills; good organization skills; taking initiative

  • Critical thinking and ability to problem solve effectively and creatively.

  • Impeccable attention to detail

  • Employee will be required to communicate in person, via telephone and via email as well as have manual dexterity, finger dexterity, multi limb coordination, oral expression, and comprehension.

  • Employee be required to walk to/from processing areas, climb ladders, wear chemical plant PPE when required, as well as occasionally lift, carry and move objects safely (< 25 lbs).
