NORC at the University of Chicago’s Education and Child Development department is seeking talented Survey Specialists to work on a variety of challenging, interesting, innovative multi-year data collection and analysis projects. This job is working on the operational side of survey data collection projects.
The incumbent is responsible for supporting small and large-scale survey, technical assistance, and evaluation projects for a variety of clients. The role requires expertise related to operational methods, including project design, data collection procedures, data management, data analysis.
This position will be located in our downtown Chicago office.
DEPARTMENT: EDUCATION & CHILD DEVELOPMENT
For more than 40 years, NORC has been committed to conducting high quality education research. Our department of Education and Child Development's research covers the full array of education-relevant populations, from pre-school children to the post-graduate doctorate holders. NORC is a leader in conducting large national surveys, as well as more targeted state and local studies, harvesting reliable, actionable early childhood data, particularly data on early care and education. The scope of our education research methodologies is wide-ranging, as well – including primary data collection, analysis and reporting of existing data, transcript abstraction, classroom observations, qualitative analysis, and experimental and quasi-experimental designs.
Prepare survey contact materials; contribute to methodological and production reports; and write detailed training and reference documents
Develop survey instrument specifications and test survey systems
Monitor data collection productivity and quality through development of quantitative reports andad hocanalyses, including summary tables, graphs, and text
Plan and provide support for trainings of interviewers and other production support staff
Support data analysis and products
Organize project meetings and take minutes
Work in teams to problem solve various data collection process issues
Serve as interdepartmental liaison between the functional groups of Survey Operations, Information Technology, the Field and/or Production Centers
Execute other duties as assigned
Bachelors' degree in the social sciences or related field (Masters' degree preferred)
At least 1 year of experience in a social science research environment (including internships)
Background in survey research preferred
Experience with quantitative analysis using SAS, SPSS, R preferred
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Access
Understanding of systems design and implementation
Knowledge of data collection and data flow processes
Must have effective verbal and written communication skills
Must be able to work collaboratively as part of a team
Solid organizational skills with ability to multi-task, strong attention to detail
