BMO Financial Group Senior Financial Analyst in Chicago, Illinois
The Senior Financial Analyst is a key player on deal teams, collaborating and generating solutions for current and perspective clients within the Commercial Bank. The typical client/prospect profiles are companies with $50MM - $500MM in annual sales. As a deal structuring expert working in conjunction with an RM, the Senior Financial Analyst will actively manage a book of business requiring on-going client interaction and financial analysis to maximize penetration and account performance.
The Senior Financial Analyst is responsible for structuring and underwriting new client credit and performing financial modeling and analysis for highly complex deals. In a proactive and independent manner, the Senior Financial Analyst will conduct continuous monitoring of their client portfolios and performance. The Senior Financial Analyst achieves various partnering efforts, including helping to manage team and client initiatives, to ensure profitable, properly structured deals are booked. Additionally, the Senior Financial Analyst will help lead the relationship team through the Credit Approval process in the most efficient manner based on their knowledge base and depth of understanding in not only Harris/BMO’s credit culture, but also the rules and terms under which the deal should be done.
The Senior Financial Analyst will manage risk, OE/audit requirements for the assigned portfolio and exercise credit/other limits and pricing authority as outlined in P&P. They will make credit decisions and recommendations in accordance with sound credit-granting principles as described in the Commercial Lending Process and in compliance with Bank Policies & Procedures.

A. Loan Structuring, Underwriting & Risk Management
Protect the Bank’s assets and maintain quality of portfolio by adhering to lending processes, policies & procedures, legal and ethical requirements and regulations, audit requirements, and established risk management guidelines. Ensure all Commercial Banking Business is in conformity with Bank Policies and other guidelines
Exercise individually held unilateral discretionary limits, as well as any held prescribed approval discretionary limits (i.e.: overdrafts, credit applications), ensuring credit decisions and recommendations are in accordance with sound credit-granting principles and in compliance with the Bank’s policies and related procedures; completing analysis; confirming security valuations; completing and approving credit applications for authorizations under Lending Policy Adhere to Know Your Customer Rules and Bank Policies & Procedures for the prevention of loss due to fraud, counterfeiting, money laundering, or defalcation; identify and report suspicious and other reportable transactions or patterns of activity that are suspected to be related to money laundering
Collaborate with relationship managers to generate ideas, identify client solutions, and deliver timely solutions.
Actively manage client solution opportunities to identify cross-selling opportunities within portfolios.
Operate as key member of the deal team to prospective clients with efforts to maximize penetration and returns.
Institute cross-selling initiatives to increase penetration with client.
Provide underwriting expertise in all categories or complexity of transactions; apply expert analytics and guidance in required structuring and terms in order to balance the risk and rewards of the transaction in attempt to win the business.
Provide expertise and guidance in negotiating and documenting transactions with clients within the context of the deal team.
Maintain awareness of all firm products and services offered and facilitate means of receiving continuous updates.
B. Portfolio Performance Management
Proactive, ongoing dialogue with borrowers within assigned portfolio to keep abreast of ongoing dynamics of the underlying business within the portfolio.
Conduct detailed analysis of borrower’s financials; scan and assess economic/external environment for issues impacting the borrower to proactively recognize trends and actively manage portfolio; balance goals to maximize return and credit quality.
Prepare/oversee preparation of concise, well-reasoned credit correspondence.
Obtain credit concurrence as client advocate.
C. Management of Internal Team Resources
Effectively orchestrate the appropriate resources (across other segments/LOBs i.e. FX or GTM) or other internal resources to meet the needs of the client and to ensure appropriate structure/process in place to achieve credit concurrence for final approval.
Effectively manage work flow of other analysts by aligning tasks with departmental goals and objectives.
Aide RM’s in developing targeted strategies and translating them in to financing guidelines or directives to achieve Credit support to implement strategy.
Remain current on financing trends in target client markets, and communicate same to team members. On going professional development is critical to success in this competitive market place.
Lead team to success by capturing opportunities for ongoing mentoring, coaching, and career development of analysts and associates.
An undergraduate degree. Focal areas of finance, economics, or accounting preferred.
CPA or MBA or equivalent experience preferred in finance, accounting or business law.
A few years of relevant experience in negotiating and structuring financial transactions.
Minimum of 5 years in financial services industry experience in a corporate lending environment developing business
Commercial Credit Qualification with Limits
In-depth understanding of Commercial Products, Commercial Lending Process, Commercial Lending Directives, all supporting processes and technology
Proven, expert level credit analysis experience/ understanding.
In-depth knowledge of the organizational lending and portfolio management policies and objectives.
Strong interpersonal skills used within a team environment and in client interaction with emphasis on excelling in relationship building.
Exceptional credit/analytical skills and ability to apply them creatively; ability to “think outside the box”.
Highly developed written and oral communication skills including the ability to write clear, concise and cogent credit correspondence.
Excellent capability to independently and proactively service multiple clients and effectively manage multiple priorities.
Leadership and coaching skills; ability to motivate others.
Ability to advocate persuasively.
Excellent abilities in managing relationships and identifying cross-selling opportunities.
Ability to learn and adapt quickly.
Expertise in financial computer applications and database management tools including MS Excel. Strong proficiency in other Microsoft Office products and the Internet.
