At TNC, we are addressing the threats posed by urban environmental problems through the power of nature itself. In addition to pursuing innovative ways to increase and fund more natural infrastructure where we need it most, our team is working to protect urban biodiversity hotspots, and connecting people to nature right here in the city.nThe two Illinois Agriculture Program projects are essential components of our ongoing work. The Downstate and Urban Agriculture GLOBE intern would work closely with our existing agriculture team to advance an ongoing conservation initiative in Downstate Illinois. The Urban project is a scoping effort that would help TNC assess ongoing urban agriculture initiatives in Chicago and evaluate how TNC might best contribute to such efforts.nWe envision three separate but interrelated efforts:nIllinois Agriculture ProgramnThe TNC Ag Program is working with the Illinois Sustainable Ag Partnership to compare soil moisture levels in farmland with and without soil health management systems in place. The GLOBE intern will process and analyze the soil moisture & soil temperature data from 3 sites (6 fields) across IL.nA literature review could also be completed, summarizing the current scope and breadth of soil moisture research already done in relation to the cropping management system.nUrbannA complimentary urban component would include a situation analysis to identify and categorize current urban agriculture initiatives in Chicago, especially those initiatives taking place in priority areas or communities where existing TNC work is taking place.nRESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPEnAnalyzing soil moisture and temperature data taken from six crop production fields with different management strategies.nConducting a literature review of soil health moisture research in the Midwest.nUndertaking a comprehensive scoping analysis of ongoing urban agriculture initiatives in Chicago with an eye toward identifying the key players, the neighborhoods and people reached, the focus of such efforts and potential overlaps with TNC priority conservation efforts. This effort may involve getting out in the field and interviewing/ meeting with representatives from the different programs.nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSnEnrolled in an undergraduate program or a recent graduate (2019) of Communication, Conservation, Environmental Studies, Politi al Science, Public Policy or related field, or equivalent of Middlebury CollegenExperience with Data analysis and StatisticsnExperience with Database managementnDESIRED QUALIFICATIONSnKnowledge of Midwest agronomic practicesnKnowledge of GIS systems and analysisnKnowledge and/or experience of soil healthnADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATIONnThis is a full-time, temporary internship position with a 10-week term of June 3 - August 9, 2019.nIntern will travel to Peoria and Bloomington, IllinoisnHousing stipend provided for duration of internshipnSALARY INFORMATIONn$12.50/per hour (undergrads) and $14.50/per hour (graduate and recently graduated level students)nELIGIBILITYnThe Nature Conservancy's GLOBE Program candidate should demonstrate at least one of the following:nContribution to diversity of The Nature Conservancy.
