Duties and Responsibilities

Loyola University Chicago’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies ( SCPS ) invites applications for a staff position as Academic Advisor, reporting to the Assistant Dean of SCPS . The Academic Advisor will provide essential student services to our non-traditional student population of adult learners. The mission of academic advising in the School of Continuing and Professional Studies is to support our students in the developmental process of pursuing and achieving their academic, social, and personal goals, understanding they do so while managing multiple other responsibilities.

SCPS currently serves students who are either returning to school to complete their bachelor’s degree or furthering their education with a completion of a professional certificate. The Academic Advisor will also be a part of an exciting transition as our unit moves to bring disciplines together for adult professional development to address the urgent and complex issues of our times.

Responsibilities will include the following:

• Serves as an academic advisor for SCPS degree and certificate students from admission to graduation. This includes:

o Conducting individualized advising appointments, reviewing transfer credit, providing course recommendations, maintaining student records, and assisting students in resolving administrative issues related to their academic records.

o Enforcing academic policies for students, faculty, and other stakeholders, while upholding FERPA requirements and the highest ethical standards.

o Identifying and clarifying academic, career, and life goals while offering appropriate support.

o Referring students to appropriate campus and off-campus resources to support their academic success.

• Supports Assistant Dean in the areas of:

o Retention and persistence, including outreach/advising to active and inactive students and outreach/advising to students on probation or those receiving academic alerts.

o Schedule review to ensure course offerings are sufficient for all programs.

o New student orientation planning and delivery

o Commencement and graduation events.

o University committees, as needed.

• Manage “Mastering Learning Tools,” the new student portal of tasks completed by new students to prepare them for success in the online learning environment.

• Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to a fast-paced, changing environment where responsibilities and duties may frequently change.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling or related field required and one to two years of related experience.


Academic and Professional Qualifications:

Candidates must:

• Have a passion and commitment to serving and supporting a diverse student body of adult learners.

• Have a minimum of bachelor’s degree. Teaching assignments for added compensation may be available for candidates with a master’s degree.

• Have at least three years of professional experience, preferably in higher education.

• Have the ability to navigate the online environment exceptionally well

• Be willing to operate a flexible schedule to accommodate the working adult student. Some evening and weekend hours required over the course of the academic year.

• Have the ability to embrace, promote, and articulate the University’s Jesuit Catholic identity.

• Demonstrate knowledge of the SCPS curriculum, program offerings, policies and procedures.

• Have highly developed interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills to adequately assess students’ academic needs and guide them to the appropriate university resources.

• Have the ability to provide empathic, compassionate, consistent, accurate, and student-focused advising.

• Possess extraordinary attention to detail and proficiency in keeping accurate student records and a willingness to learn online tools.

• Demonstrate ability to work constructively in teams and independently, as well as the willingness to collaborate across departments both face-to-face and online.


• Teaching assignments for added compensation may be available.

• Have at least three years of professional experience, preferably in higher education.

Computer Skills

Be proficient navigating online tools (such as PeopleSoft) and meeting tools (such as Skype, Zoom, etc.).

Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite
